Xi Lei, an artist, researcher, and writer, earned his PhD in artistic research from the University of Art and Design Linz. He holds a master’s degree from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and a bachelor’s degree from the China Academy of Art. He currently teaches at the School of Communication & Design at the China Academy of Art. He has previously served as an ÖAW DOC Fellow, an assistant professor at the University of Art and Design Linz, and a Visiting Scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). His creative and research focus spans media, technological, ecological, agricultural, and heritage issues across Asia, Europe, and beyond. He employs a wide range of artistic media and methods, including digital video, 2D/3D animation, painting, multimedia installations, text, sound, and artificial intelligence. His work engages with fields such as media art, heritage studies, public art, conceptual art, ecological art, art in context, arts-based research, media studies, cultural studies, philosophy of technology, environmental humanities, geography, ecology, anthropology, multispecies ethnography, and sensory ethnography. He is also a writer of art reviews.
